River Road follows the Guadalupe River downstream from the base of Canyon Dam toward New Braunfels and Gruene, ducking under cypress canopies and crossing the river itself half a dozen times on low-water crossings. It's a Hill Country classic in summer — expect tubers, kayakers, and bikini traffic on weekends — and a peaceful shaded drive the rest of the year. Higher-clearance vehicles handle the crossings after rain without drama; sedans should check the gauges before setting out. Combine with FM 306 back over the ridge for a nice loop and a stop at one of the wineries or breweries along the way.
